Simple Tattoo For You

Thanks Washington!

Ben and I just got back in town from the Jet City Tattoo Expo. Hat's off to Jasper and Tim for putting together a great show. Everyone had a blast working and hanging out. Not to mention, it took place in one of the nicest casinos I've ever been to. Also, a big thanks to our friends at Triumph Tattoo for putting us up. The people in Washington know how to get tattooed! Here's a few pics of that went down...

Ben Siebert
Steven Turner

On another convention note - if you happen to be in the San Angelo, Texas area near the end of this month, come get tattooed. Ben Siebert and I will be attending the 1st West Texas Tattoo Expo. Drop us a line if you're interested in getting some work done. I, along with fellow machine builiders Andy Bolin and Kevin Wathk
e, will be at the expo peddling goods. Click here for information.

But while rumors say that the couple is about to remarry, the tattoo artist of the singer reveals that she came to see him asking to cover this permanent tattoo.

We don't know the motives behind her decision but she has a fwe options : to cover it with another design or to try laser treatment to remove the tattoo.

We might find out more about her decision after they marry again....or not.

Visitor trips and tears £80 million Picasso Painting!

A student viting New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art halved the value of a Pablo Picasso to £40million - after stumbling into it and causing a rip. The female student who will not be named, made a 6in tear in the lower right-hand corner of the painting. It is estimated that the painting can be fully repaired, leaving just a small line, but because of the damage, the value of the painting, previously estimated at £80 million will never recover and is now estimated at £40 million. It is a lot of money when you consider that she just lost her balance during the art class which can happen anywhere to any of us. Collectors are not really interested in painting or any objects if they have been repaired. The most valuable works of art are always in the state of origin, as intended or left by the artist.

Museum officials will not identify the student and they have confirmed that the 105-year-old painting will be fixed in time for the museum's Picasso exhibition in April.

No tattoo too young in Guernsey

Guernsey's Health and Social Services Department have released a statement to remind everyone that it is illegal to get a tattoo or a piercing before the age of 18.

The BBC tells us today that a 14-year-old girl had been off school after getting a piercing in her nose. Only piercings in the lower lobe of the ear (i.e. "normal" or "standard old fashion" piercings for earrings are ok). Any other piercing or tattoo before 18 is illegal and really the tattoo artist or piercing artist should know better and tell young people to live with the idea for a few years and then come back to the shop. Sometimes people think for years about their tattoos and where they will have it done before they go ahead and have it. At least then it is a mature decision and one that will not be a regret at a later stage. Considering it is quite expensive to have a tattoo removed, it's best to get it right.

I would definitely recommand to talk to young people about it and tell them exactly why it is illegal and not to be influenced by fashion or peers.

Italian Renaissance drawings at the British Museum

If you are a big fan of Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo, make sure to book your tickets for this amazing exhibition at the British Museum : Italian Renaissance drawings, some of them never seen before in Britain. The exhibition will run from 22 April to 25 July 2010 and will features 100 exquisite drawings by Italian Renaissance artists including Raphael, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Verrocchio.

During the 3 months of the exhibition, it is expected that thousands of visitors will travel from Europe and the USA to visit London and see this amazing "once in a life time" exhibition. It will be a unique opportunity to see The British Museum’s collection of Italian Renaissance drawings. The masterpieces are so fragile that they are only exhibited once in a generation. The exhibition has been planned in partnership with the Uffizi in Florence. Almost half of the works will come from Florence, and some have never been shown in the UK before.

This exhibition is a unique opportunity to discover the evolution of drawing during the 15th century and to view some really beautiful art. Some of these drawings represent the origin of the High Renaissance style of Michelangelo and Raphael, and with the impressive list of artist included in the exhibition, it will be a fantastic experience for all art lovers....and maybe an unusual inspiration place for tattoo artists.

Mosaics most Beautiful, Two Inspirational Projects.

The Wall of Expression, a craft intervention project in KaiKai Housing Estate, at Port Noloth, North Western Cape. Image Elle Decoration, Spring Edition No 65, Article Discover the most beautiful wall in the world.

The Wall of Expression, KaiKai Housing Estate, at Port Nolloth, North Western Cape. Image website Kaikai Housing estate. Subscribe to Elle Decoration for an extensive article on the project, see Spring Edition No 65.

Ambitious projects incorporating Mosaics at its best.

Two projects deserve mention on my blog. They both showcase mosaics at its best. Done to perfection and on a grand scale, having a serious impact on the cultural scene of both locations. The first project is on the west coast, while the other is inland on the East Coast of the country (South Africa). Both driven by two men obsessed with their visions and determined to see it through to the very end. The first project, the Wall of Expression, (KaiKai Housing Estate) Port Nolloth, is of particular interest to me, as I have in a small way contributed to the development of the project, assisting Jimmy du Toit, as creative consultant. The second Project, Lodge Amm is of interest, because nearly 11 years ago Peter Amm shared with me his dream to build a structure to house his African Craft collection. Very shortly this project, showcased below, will open its doors to local and international tourists. Although very different in style, both projects utilise ceramic tiles in a creative and exciting way, inspiring others out there with a creative vision that seems to be too outrageous.

Port Nolloth's Art and Craft's Community Intervention project gains national recognition in two magazines. Above is the title page for the article in Elle Decoration, issue no 65. Visit their site, to subscribe and follow the success of the project.

Project One.
The arid landscape and particular climate, called for a serious creative intervention. Situated on route to Namibia, the Richtersveldt and Namaqualand, home of the world renowned spring flower spectacular, it is perfectly positioned for a product that will draw attention to this rather remote part of the country. The town is being transformed by the local community's involvement in a timeless arts and crafts outreach project, that is both uplifting and adding colour, in more ways than one. The success of the project, bares testimony to one man and his family's dream, and the will of the local community to embrace his passion, commitment, perfection and determination, to see the project through until the end. This endeavour established a culture of arts and crafts, so rooted in the belief of the local community, that it seems to have been there forever. The site specific art work (image above) is not a permanent structure as yet, the scale is also misleading, but very impressive. These are mosaic covered bricks, dug into the sand to provide a spectacular creative intervention in the water. It makes for very interesting viewing as the waves break over the structure.

Show House, Images from Visi, local decor, design & architecture Magazine. with locally designed and manufactured bookshelves and furniture. Even the carpet takes inspiration from one of the wall murals. The idea is to provide the local community with clients, right on their doorstep - those purchasing property in the Kai Kai estate.

Lodge Peter Amm, Kloof, KwaZulu Natal South Africa. The images above and below, provide views of the major spine of the building (towards the entrance), 20 pillars adorned with mosaics, covered with plastic to protect the artworks. The vastness of the space and scale of it is unbelievable.

The grand corridor of 20 pillars -towards the entrance of the Lodge, - quite spectacular.

2nd Project; Peter Amm's Lodge in Kloof - A dream in its final phase of being realised.

The second project is very different. Eleven years in the making, and on completion, it will be something to behold. Should you be able to afford a weekend stay, in one of the 10 executive rooms, it will be an experience never to forget. The executive resort will be launched early this year, a major marketing and communication affair. The setting is just incredible, perched high up on the ridge, situated next to a game reserve, it provides a 360 visual experience of one of the most beautiful places on the planet. The location in itself is something special and Peter Amm had the insight, at a very young age, to purchase the property and realise a lifelong dream to build a structure to house his collection of African Artefacts - now it will provide guests access to a piece of paradise (Visit my blog entry titled, Paradise and see the Gardens of Peter Amm's splendid home - 25 hectares of pure beauty). But it is the structure, and the use of ceramic mosaics and artefacts that will adorn the walls and pillars of this spectacular Lodge, that will make this one of the most unique places to visit and to experience.

View of the Grand entrance. Once the plants have grown, the entire structure will come to life and merge with its environment to create an harmonious whole, as if its been there for ages.

Architect and Horticulturist

Peter Amm is an Architect with a passion for Flora (he is also an Horticulturist). The entire entrance and landscaping incorporates water features, that will ensure that the plants grow and integrate the structure into its surroundings. A creative feast; the solving of architectural details must have been a nightmare for the construction company. Peter Amm has always had an interest in blending old window frames and doors and artefacts with the new. This has become his style and every artefact that will adorn the walls and rooms, a vast collection of note, has been transformed and shaped by his own hand, to ensure the lodge has an indigenous feel. Most of the rare pieces will be set up in a museum at the entrance.

The roof structure - reminiscent of the scales of a gecko and or lizard.

Chris O'Donnell is one of the best tattoo artists alive today. Check out his VBS.tv Art Talk episode. This interview provides a load of insight and inspiration to both tattooers and tattoo collectors, alike. Mr. O'Donnell is an amazing artist and a down-to-earth, humble person. A real gift to the world of tattooing.

Benjamin "Dagger Cats" Siebert, has done it again! This is his rendition of a classic Jerry Collins design from the 1960's. You can't go wrong with tradition.

Benjamin has been a bit reluctant in adopting his recent moniker. As no surprise to us, tattooers worldwide have embraced it. Only time will tell whether or not it will stick. If you happen to see him out on the town, make sure to holla at "dagger cats".

Keep Wichita beautiful, get tattooed!

Flight of the Valkyrie!

I finally got a healed picture of our counter guy's front panel. Jordon sat like a champion. Three sessions, three weeks, and some serious commitment! If you like what you see, you should come on in and throw down! Be the envy of all your friends, it's all the rage! - Steven

Art Show...

You may not believe it, but here at Hell Bomb Tattoo, we create much more than tattoos. We even create art that's not of the "tattoo art" genre! For those of you Wichitans that may frequent the downtown area for drinks and other activities, come check out some of our new works! Our good friends at the Alibi Room were kind enough to let us display our art. Even if you hate the art, I can guarantee you'll love the bar. Great people and a superb atmosphere. They're located at 919 E. Douglas in Old Town. Above are a few previews... (art will be hanging until the end of Jan.)

Updated Photos of the Shop...

There's nothing like some new flooring to get you pumped up! (and yes, I say that seriously) Especially in a tattoo parlour. If only we could get the exterior of the building to look as nice as the inside, but these things take time. It's our goal to create an environment that's inspiring for us as artists, as well as comfortable for our clients. Nothing's worse than coping with a painful experience while in unpleasant surroundings. Besides, our schizophrenic taste in music is probably enough to keep most people feeling loose anyway. Keeping it classy, one day at a time.
