Exquisite Holmegaard Glass as captured with the very special SONY NEX-5

Per Ltken (1916-1998) Heart vase designed for Holmegaard in 1958.
Friday I decided to purchase a new camera - my old camera being the Canon A-1 bought in Hong Kong in 1984. Most of the images posted on this blog over the past two years were taken with my Cell phone camera and a small digital camera from work. I received advice from numerous individuals, including recommendations from my very own brother, Alan Hon - as to the ultimate choice of camera for my particular needs. At first it was a toss-up between the Nikon D3100, the Canon EOS 500D and or a Sony Alpha. In the end, after much thought, and a convincing recommendation from a colleague at work, Angus Campbell (an Industrial Designer), I purchased the new compact Sony Alpha NEX-5. The compact and lightweight design being the deciding factors. I could not face walking round with a bulky camera whilst on holiday- like a true Japanese tourist.

Needless to say that Friday afternoon and early Saturday morning was spent trying out the new toy in my studio - the back 'stoep' (balcony floor) with its neutral grey cement finish. The lighting is absolutely perfect as the posted photos will testify.
Per Ltken (1916-1998) Heart vase (1958).
I decided to photograph three products from my small collection of fifties glass, especially the Holmegaard heart vase (one of two in my collection) and two of seven rectangle tube vases (all different colour combinations). The two types of vases compliment each other, as the heart shaped vases resembles the female and the rectangular tube like vase, reminiscent of a condom, the male equivalent.

The heart shaped vases are attributed to the danish glass maker Per Ltken (1916-1998). He designed more than 3000 pieces for Holmegaard from 1942 until his death in 1998. The pieces in my collection was designed during the late fifties and early sixties. I am particularly interested in them because of the symbolic aspect of their design (heart shaped). The other vase in my collection has a smokey black interior.

The following rectangle tube vases are very special to me, especially the first one, clear glass with smokey black tube interior. I am not sure of the designer or the factory that produced these - please can anyone assist me in this regard. I have searched the Internet and I am sorry to say none the wiser. I will be most grateful if someone can even assist with where to start looking for the origin of these vases.

Please could you leave your comments regarding the photos, the quality of the lighting, styling of the images and the vases themselves. Very soon I will post images of my entire collection. As soon as I get feedback on the designer and the factory that produced these vases.

Cheryl Cole Unveils A New Tattoo

We all know that Cheryl Cole’s likes to look her best all the time. And she loves to enhance her body with some great tattoos. It is believed that she has 7 tattoos on her body and earlier this week, she has unveiled a brand new tattoo on the small of her back.

It was spotted by photographers as she left the X Factor rehearsal show.

She confessed to the Mirror that she had designed the new tattoo herself with the help of an artist. She's done a really good job but then again, we all know she has a good sense for fashion and style. The new tattoo has got a strong meaning. It was done to symbolise a new beginning and it means she has moved on from the mistake of the Mrs C tattoo on her neck.

The new tattoo is an elaborated design and was added to the butterfly tattoo she already had on her lower back.

Back Tattoos As Fashion

It is definitely an outdated, even laughable idea that female back tattoos are for only the "loose" ladies and particularly thinking of the lower back tattoo as a "tramp stamp". It is extremely close minded to think that an attractive woman with a back tattoo must be immoral and unsatisfied. It's very much the other way as a woman who is strong, independent and fashionable is one who would strongly consider a female back tattoo.

There are certainly a few fantastic reasons for desiring a female back tattoo in addition to fashion. Regardless of what part of the back you choose to have a tattoo inked you have the ability to cover it when appropriate such as many workplaces that still require tattoos to be covered. Also a design in this area will highlight the natural curves and shapes of a woman, predominantly the lower back or tailbone area. When a woman chooses to wear clothing that will allow their lower back tattoo to be visible it gives the impression of sensuality that other tattoos fail to accomplish.

There also is the upper back tattoo which is highly popular. These tattoos can range form a simple small and delicate design such as a flower to a large and elaborate design. Similar to the lower back tattoo a high back tattoo should be placed in a way that it can be covered when appropriate. However the upper back tattoo may be more difficult to cover up when formal dress wear is common. A gown for example would usually be lower cut around the upper back making it difficult to cover your design. You might consider a smaller design that would better blend with this type of formal wear and actually add to the attractiveness of your look. It does seem that the social bias of tattoos is fading and therefore some female back designs might be admired in this setting.

On the other hand outdoor wear such as bathing suits and tank tops and other casual wear would expose your design. This setting though would be one that a larger tattoo might be greatly accepted and admired. It is a good opportunity for a woman to show her strength and independence. Men like strong, independent and confident women and think of them as sexy.
